Châu Viễn Xứ Workshop Presenter

Châu Viễn Xứ

I am an undergraduate liberal arts student here at the University of Cincinnati, with a focus on international affairs and communication. I am a former Southeast Asian refugee, a lived experience, which I will be sharing in a form of a monologue reading during the performance portion of the conference. I’ve had public speaking training in the form of courses here at the University of Cincinnati, an extensive experience in sales, and a recent move into the performance art sphere through spoken word and comedy.

Journey to The West: Immigrant Narratives

In today’s political climate, immigrants and refugees are being demonized as the grand other. Racist laws of yesteryear and the discriminatory practices which followed, reveal that history may not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme. Sourcing the literary works of Viet Thanh Nguyen and post- colonial scholar Homi K. Bhabha, this workshop will examine the immigrant and refugee experience through the critical lense of similarities and distinctions. Through collaborative discussion, participants will leave with a better understanding of immigrant experiences and its nuances, along with the privileges and disadvantages associated with mobility.
